Zaha Hadid Architects: Design do Museu Nikola Tesla

Um projeto colaborativo entre Zaha Hadid Architects e Bureau Cube Partners venceu a competição para o novo Museu Nikola Tesla que será construído em Belgrado, Sérvia. O projeto renovará a antiga Milan Vapa Paper Mill com recursos arquitetônicos impressionantes que culminam no átrio central.

De longe, uma abordagem criativa para reutilização adaptativa combina perfeitamente as adições contemporâneas, em grande parte vidro e metal, com o caráter original de tijolo e concreto do edifício. As asas tradicionais de formato retangular do edifício se desintegram satisfatoriamente no telhado elíptico com claraboia, espiralando para baixo e ao redor da chaminé original.

Situada no limite entre tradição e modernidade, a qualidade estética é adequada para o museu, que homenageia o tecnólogo sérvio-americano. Um dos principais engenheiros do século 20 e um colaborador próximo de Thomas Edison, Tesla lançou as bases para sistemas de fornecimento de eletricidade por corrente alternada, impulsionando a era posterior da Revolução Industrial. Muito parecido com a linguagem visual do design, as descobertas de Nikola Tesla representam um período de transição entre o pré e o pós-industrial.

Destacado na entrada e em todo o edifício, arcos esféricos emolduram o átrio de altura tripla, enfatizando ainda mais a forma do telhado de vidro. O primeiro andar inclui exposições com artefatos históricos, exibições interativas e um programa rotativo de exposições temporárias. Talvez o ponto alto da experiência seja a Tesla Electronic Transformer Gallery, que abriga um transformador de 12 milhões de volts.

Finalmente, o exterior do museu inclui um amplo espaço público com caminhos, jardins e praças destinados a refletir visualmente os conceitos inovadores de Tesla. O espaço ao ar livre proporcionará acesso à orla estendida de Belgrado e ao transporte público local.

From afar, a creative approach to adaptive reuse seamlessly blends the contemporary additions, largely glass and metal, with the original brick and concrete character of the building. The traditional rectangular-shaped wings of the building satisfyingly disintegrate into the elliptical skylight roof, spiraling down and around the original chimney.

Sitting on the border of tradition and modernity, the aesthetic quality is fitting for the museum, which honors the Serbian-American technologist. One of the foremost engineers of the 20th century and a close collaborator with Thomas Edison, Tesla laid the ground for alternating current electrici supply systems–supercharging the latter-era of the Industrial Revolution. Much like the visual language of the design, Nikola Tesla’s discoveries represent a transition period between the pre and post-industrial.

Featured at the entrance and throughout the building, spherical arches frame the triple height atrium, further emphasizing the shape of the glass roof. The first floor includes exhibitions holding historical artifacts, interactive displays, and a rotating program of temporary exhibitions. Perhaps the highlight of the experience is the Tesla Electronic Transformer Gallery, which houses a 12-million-volt transformer.

Finally, the exterior of the museum includes a sprawling public space including pathways, gardens and plazas intended to visually reflect the concepts pioneered by Tesla. The outdoor space will grant access to the extended Belgrade waterfront and local public transportation.
