Molti di noi non possono dire di essere mai entrati nella casa del proprio artista preferito, ma per i fan di Do Ho Suh l’invito è sempre aperto. L’artista sudcoreano ha appena inaugurato la sua mostra più ampia di sempre al National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art di Seul (MMCA). Visitabile fino al 9 febbraio 2027, l’esposizione riunisce centinaia di opere inedite, iconiche e recenti, offrendo un’immersione senza precedenti nella sua inconfondibile pratica artistica.

Celebre per le sue colorate installazioni di «architettura in tessuto», Suh esplora questioni legate a famiglia, memoria, identità, sradicamento e collettività, spesso attraverso il corpo e l’abitare. Le esperienze maturate vivendo in Corea, negli Stati Uniti e in Europa alimentano l’importanza che attribuisce alla prospettiva, letterale, sociale o politica.

La mostra in corso al MMCA riunisce oltre 500 opere che attraversano trent’anni di attività, tra installazioni, sculture, disegni e video. Spiccano alcune delle sue celebri installazioni in tessuto — “Perfect Home: London, Horsham, New York, Berlin, Providence, Seoul” (2024), “Nest/s” (2024) e “Rubbing/Loving: Seoul Home” (2013-2022) — ma anche gli schizzi degli anni universitari e le intricate illustrazioni tessili, realizzate con una tecnica sviluppata con STPI Singapore.

In realtà, le opere che per prime hanno portato Suh alla ribalta internazionale non raffigurano affatto case. Tra gli altri punti salienti figurano “Floor”, l’opera presentata alla Biennale di Venezia del 2001, composta da decine di migliaia di figure in plastica che sorreggono il peso del pubblico sovrastante, e “Some/One” (2001), una veste cava e scintillante di piastrine militari, realizzata durante il servizio di leva. La tensione tra individuo e collettività è da sempre presente nel suo lavoro.

Suh presenta inoltre per la prima volta “Memory of Love” (2026). Realizzata in collaborazione con RE;CODE, il marchio coreano noto per i capi upcycled e prodotti in modo sostenibile, la nuova giacca impiega ritagli di tessuto provenienti dagli abiti della sua stessa famiglia per creare, all’interno, delicate tasche destinate a custodire piccoli ricordi.
