Tra le tappe imperdibili c’è lo Spur, la più recente e più orientale sezione del parco, che ospita anche il monumentale Plinth. Ancora una volta, High Line Art invita il pubblico a esprimersi sulle future installazioni. Il programma di arte pubblica ha svelato 62 proposte di artisti per commissioni su larga scala che occuperanno il parco sopraelevato nel 2029 e nel 2030.

Situato lungo lo Spur e affacciato sulla 10th Avenue all’altezza della West 30th Street, dal 2019 il Plinth si è affermato come uno degli iconici palcoscenici newyorkesi dell’arte pubblica. Il parco sopraelevato ha ospitato diverse sculture tra le più amate della città, come il piccione gigante di Iván Argote, “Dinosaur” (2024), e l’inaugurale “Brick House” (2019) di Simone Leigh.

Attualmente in mostra, fino all’autunno del 2027, c’è “The Light That Shines Through the Universe” (2026) di Tuan Andrew Nguyen: una scultura in arenaria alta 27 piedi raffigurante un Buddha di Bamiyan, che riproduce due statue oggi distrutte, scolpite oltre duemila anni fa nelle falesie dell’Afghanistan. Il successore di Nguyen è già stato scelto, ma il progetto vincitore resterà riservato fino alla presentazione ufficiale, prevista più avanti nel corso del prossimo anno.

Inserite tra i giardini dello Spur, in mezzo a migliaia di piante perenni, alberi e arbusti, le commissioni del Plinth offrono agli artisti una piattaforma davvero unica per ispirare il pubblico, integrandosi nel paesaggio di cemento circostante con un respiro e una scala ambiziosi.

Il parere della comunità aiuta il comitato curatoriale a ridurre il numero delle proposte fino a una rosa finale. Provenienti da 37 Paesi, i candidati per il 2029 e il 2030 comprendono numerosi nomi di primo piano dell’arte contemporanea, tra cui Nina Chanel Abney, Jonathan Lyndon Chase, Ali Cherri, Kathleen Ryan, Anicka Yi, Dawn Ng, Laure Prouvost, Wendy Red Star, Kei Imazu, Es Devlin e Kevin Beasley.
