Ironiche e introspettive, provocatorie e profondamente personali, le opere di Devin Troy Strother non si lasciano incasellare facilmente. L’artista si è conquistato un seguito con lavori che decostruiscono i codici sociali che ci governano, sovvertendo gli stereotipi razziali con lucidità critica e facendo spesso dell’umorismo una porta d’accesso. È un approccio perfettamente incarnato dalla battuta di Paid in Full che ha ispirato la sua ultima personale: «BMW sta per Black Man’s Wish, perché vorrei averne una».

Nella mostra B M W (A Black Man’s Wish), da Ruttkowski;68 a Colonia, in Germania, l’artista con base a Los Angeles indaga su come persino l’oro possa arrugginire. In una nuova serie di dipinti e opere a tecnica mista, riflette sul peso culturale associato alla casa automobilistica tedesca, assunta a emblema dei significati mutevoli di ambizione, fantasia e successo nell’immaginario collettivo e personale.

Il titolo rimanda alla cultura aspirazionale della Harlem degli anni Ottanta, dove possedere un’auto del genere era il segno che avresti raggiunto il successo. Oggi, la mostra fa riferimento anche all’auto dell’artista: una BMW 328i station wagon del 2012. Quello che un tempo era uno degli status symbol più riconoscibili del mondo assume una nuova quotidianità, una dimensione domestica, suggerendo che i sogni possono sempre essere riconsiderati.

Per tutta la mostra, un’unica automobile innesca riflessioni più ampie su desiderio, classe, razza e sulle narrazioni che proiettiamo sugli oggetti materiali. Accanto alla sua nota predilezione per Philip Guston, Strother cita nei titoli delle opere anche altri artisti, fra cui Tal R., Eddie Martinez, Emil Nolde e Max Ernst, guardando ai grandi della storia dell’arte e della contemporaneità per costruire un proprio canone del successo.
