L’artista americano Roe Ethridge apre l’archivio di Nobuyoshi Araki per una nuova mostra a due voci alla Anton Kern Gallery di New York. Araki, noto per il suo stile confessionale di “I-Photography”, ed Ethridge, raffinato pittorialista pop, condividono per la prima volta lo stesso spazio, uniti dal talento nel creare tensioni visive e da un approccio alla macchina fotografica pittorico e giocato sulle giustapposizioni.

Curata e scandita dallo stesso Ethridge, la mostra propone una ricca costellazione di nature morte, nudi e composizioni floreali, mettendo in relazione i codici estetici distinti dei due artisti. Ethridge presenta due nuove stampe tratte dalla sua onirica serie pinhole Floral Arrangements degli anni ’90, una scelta innescata dalle opere intrise di Liquitex di Araki, Painted Flowers (2004), che evocano la quieta banalità degli ornamenti suburbani e i ricordi dei calendari di sua madre.

Le mette in dialogo con estratti dall’archivio di Araki, in particolare Flower Cemetery e Tokyo Nude. Scene erotiche costruite si sovrappongono alla ruvidità dei vicoli di Tokyo, oscillando tra pubblico e privato, mentre la consueta grazia della bellezza floreale viene incrinata da inquietanti figure di plastica disseminate nelle opere.

Ethridge prende spunto dall’istintività di Araki in “Landing in Tokyo”, uno scatto iPhone del Monte Fuji ripreso dal finestrino di un aereo, e in “Rainbow over Shore Front Parkway”, un’immagine sublime di ciò che resta dopo la pioggia. Entrambe le opere attingono a quella modalità viscerale di documentazione che caratterizza il maestro giapponese, riletta attraverso gesti universali e contemporanei.

Nobuyoshi Araki e Roe Ethridge è ora visitabile nella main gallery della Anton Kern Gallery e nella vetrina di 91 Walker fino al 2 luglio.
