Magnum Photos ha collaborato con la londinese Photographers’ Gallery per lanciare Odyssey, la sua nuova Square Print Sale. Con oltre 100 opere di Martin Parr, Daido Moriyama, Eve Arnold, Steve McCurry, Alice Mann e molti altri, la collezione diventa una tappa ideale per interrogarsi su viaggio e scoperta, chiedendosi: dove siamo stati e dove stiamo andando?

“Odyssey considera la fotografia come un atto di osservazione continua”, ha dichiarato Michael Sargeant, Global Digital Director di Magnum. “Racconta i viaggi intrapresi, talvolta in modo rischioso, come nel poema epico di Omero, talvolta dispiegati attraverso un coinvolgimento a lungo termine con persone, luoghi e idee.”

Alcuni scatti di spicco assumono un taglio più giornalistico, raccontando i conflitti e gli eventi che hanno plasmato il nostro futuro collettivo. Basti pensare alla foto di Peter van Agtmael di un soldato americano in Iraq, parte della sua serie del 2006 “2nd Tour, Hope I Don’t Die”, o all’immagine di Larry Towell che ritrae un newyorkese stordito mentre raccoglie un foglio di giornale volato fuori dal World Trade Center all’indomani dell’11 settembre.

Altrove, i fotografi si volgono verso l’interiorità per illuminare il modo in cui si fa i conti con se stessi, dai viaggi epici alle nostre manifestazioni più intime di affetto. Tra gli ulteriori highlight della curatela, la prima vendita postuma di Parr — una coda sinuosa a St Michael’s Mount in Cornovaglia, UK; un’immagine delle gioioseDrummies di Mann; un nudo a specchio a cascata in tinte pastello di Juno Calypso e lo scatto di due ragazzi in viaggio verso Huancayo, in Perù, di Jim Goldberg.

“È una splendida occasione per riunire artisti di talento con prospettive diverse su ciò che ‘odyssey’ significa per loro”, ha scritto Shoair Mavlian, direttrice di The Photographers’ Gallery, istituzione che trarrà beneficio dalla vendita. “La Square Print Sale apre nuove possibilità a un pubblico più ampio di possedere fotografie d’eccezione e lasciarsi ispirare dal loro potere di emozionarci, ispirarci e unirci.”

Ogni fotografia sarà disponibile in una stampa 6 x 6” in edizione limitata durante la Square Print Sale, che proseguirà fino al 29 marzo.
