Peu d’entre nous peuvent se vanter d’avoir mis les pieds chez leur artiste préféré, mais pour les admirateurs de Do Ho Suh, la porte est toujours ouverte. L’artiste sud-coréen vient d’inaugurer sa plus grande exposition à ce jour au National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art de Séoul (MMCA). Jusqu’au 9 février 2027, l’exposition réunit des centaines d’œuvres inédites, emblématiques ou récentes, pour une plongée sans précédent dans sa pratique singulière.

Célèbre pour ses installations colorées d’« architecture de tissu », Do Ho Suh explore les questions de la famille, de la mémoire, de l’identité, du déplacement et du collectif, souvent à travers le corps ou la maison. Son expérience personnelle, entre la Corée, les États-Unis et l’Europe, nourrit notamment l’importance qu’il accorde à la perspective, qu’elle soit littérale, sociale ou politique.

L’exposition actuellement présentée au MMCA réunit plus de 500 œuvres issues de ses trente années de pratique, entre installations, sculptures, dessins et vidéos. Plusieurs de ses célèbres installations en tissu — « Perfect Home: London, Horsham, New York, Berlin, Providence, Seoul » (2024), « Nest/s » (2024) et « Rubbing/Loving: Seoul Home » (2013-2022) — y occupent une place de choix. On y découvre également des croquis de ses années d’université et d’intricates illustrations textiles, réalisées selon une technique développée avec STPI Singapore.

Les œuvres qui ont d’abord propulsé Do Ho Suh sur la scène internationale ne comportent, en réalité, aucune maison. Parmi les autres temps forts figurent « Floor », sa pièce présentée à la Biennale de Venise en 2001, composée de dizaines de milliers de figurines en plastique supportant le poids des visiteurs au-dessus d’elles, et « Some/One » (2001), une robe creuse et scintillante constituée de plaques d’identité militaires, créée pendant son service obligatoire. La tension entre l’individu et le collectif a toujours été présente.

Do Ho Suh dévoile également « Memory of Love » (2026). Créée en collaboration avec RE;CODE, la marque coréenne connue pour ses vêtements upcyclés et produits de manière durable, cette nouvelle veste utilise des morceaux de tissu découpés dans les vêtements de sa propre famille pour aménager, à l’intérieur, de délicates poches destinées à accueillir des souvenirs.
