Nan Goldin met le cap sur Londres. Pour la première fois depuis plus de vingt ans, la célèbre artiste et activiste américaine est mise à l’honneur dans une grande institution britannique avec You Never Did Anything Wrong, qui ouvrira à la Hayward Gallery en novembre.

Chroniqueuse du New York des années 1980, Goldin est connue pour saisir des instants de vulnérabilité, d’amour et de perte. Depuis cinquante ans, elle s’impose comme une figure majeure de la photographie contemporaine, plaçant le médium au cœur du discours artistique actuel grâce à des images d’une sincérité et d’une délicatesse telles qu’elles abolissent la distance entre l’observateur et l’observé.

Cette nouvelle exposition réunit certaines des pièces les plus importantes de son œuvre diaristique, qualifiée par le directeur artistique du Southbank Centre, Mark Ball, de « témoignage vivant et profond de l’intimité humaine et de la résilience ». Elle fait écho au lancement au Royaume‑Uni de The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, son mythique « opéra downtown », présenté chez Gagosian London plus tôt cette année.

Une grande partie de sa pratique consiste à documenter et amplifier les récits de ses proches et de communautés généralement tenues à l’écart des circuits dominants, des scènes queer et post‑punk des années 1980 et 1990 à son engagement plus récent en faveur de la paix et des droits humains pour les personnes touchées à Gaza.

« Si le public britannique a peut‑être déjà aperçu des fragments de l’histoire de Nan, cette grande exposition offrira enfin une immersion, à l’échelle institutionnelle, dans l’univers d’une véritable révolutionnaire », explique Rachel Thomas, conservatrice en chef Roden. « La présentation de la Hayward invite à découvrir une œuvre essentielle pour comprendre les liens intimes entre expérience personnelle et action politique, révélant la condition humaine dans toute sa beauté et sa fragilité. »
