L’atelier d’un artiste n’est jamais seulement un espace de travail physique, mais un lieu psychologique et conceptuel où se jouent l’identité, la création et l’économie. Les artistes et co‑commissaires Anicka Yi et Josh Kline déplient les multiples vies de l’atelier dans une nouvelle exposition chez Hauser & Wirth, à New York. Présentée par la galerie et l’organisation artistique à but non lucratif Performance Space New York, l’exposition, joliment intitulée Studio Visit invite 27 artistes à revenir sur les lieux intimes et les pratiques qui ont façonné leur carrière.

Oscillant entre sphère privée et espace public, l’exposition présente des œuvres de American Artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Huma Bhabha, Cecily Brown, Farah Al Qasimi, Tschabalala Self, Wolfgang Tillmans, Rirkrit Tiravanija et Ambera Wellmann. En parallèle des œuvres, chaque artiste a été invité à livrer un texte sur ses premiers ateliers, ensuite transformé, grâce à l’IA, en « souvenirs générés par la machine » en couleur, comme les qualifie la galerie.

Ce projet curatorial s’inspire de Circular File, le collectif artistique que Yi et Kline ont fondé avec Jon Santos en 2007 et 2010. À l’image de Studio Visit, le groupe avait recours à la performance expérimentale et à la télévision pour sonder les formes de travail artistique, affinant la compréhension des vies et des modes de vie des artistes en dehors du white cube.

En plaçant au centre les communautés qui naissent du processus de création, l’exposition nous invite à réfléchir aux technologies et aux infrastructures qui rendent possibles les dialogues entre jeunes artistes, réunis par la proximité autant que par le hasard.
