Pharrell Williams is already a household name in fashion, music and even skincare – now, he’s added LEGO set designer to the list.
Pharrell has unveiled his own spaceship LEGO set, entitled Over the Moon. The set was ideated and designed in partnership with LEGO’s team over the course of several months, throughout which the company says they came up with hundreds of potential ideas.
They landed on a gold and black spaceship cascading toward the sky, leaving a pastel jet stream in its midst. The total set includes 966 pieces, including 51 different minifigure heads, and the designer team said the most difficult part was figuring out how to angle the jet stream to give it stability while still appearing dynamic.
Pharrell’s relationship with LEGO goes a long way back. The artist’s own documentary film, Piece by Piece, was even shot by director Morgan Neville entirely through the LEGO lens. For his set, he also drew from his experience of witnessing Air Force planes passing by his childhood home.
“When I was a child, my perception of reality was based on a 20-mile radius. And at the center of it was Atlantis Apartments. We lived in the crash zone of the Air Force Base, where the Blue Angels would fly all the time,” Pharrell said. “So, my reference for looking up was always jets. And when you think beyond – what typically flies the highest, if you will, is space shuttles.”
“I was raised at a time when mankind was obsessed with the heavens, technology, and ultimately rocket systems. Growing up, the space shuttle was the thing that we saw as something which could take you beyond not only where you were, but, like, to the Moon.”
Pharrell’s Over the Moon set is available for pre-order now for $109.99 USD on the LEGO website.
