Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj and Over 200 Other Artists Sign Open Letter Demanding for Responsible Use of AI in Music
The letter is penned by the Artists Rights Alliance.
More than 200 musicians, including the likes of Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, J Balvin, Chuck D, Benny The Butcher, Metro Boomin and Q-Tip, signed an open letter penned by the Artists Rights Alliance demanding for responsible use of AI in music.
The letter urges “AI developers, technology companies, platforms and digital music services” to stop the use of AI tech to “infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.” While the organization acknowledges the potential positive impacts of AI when used responsibly, it also states that big companies are utilizing artists’ works to train their AI models without permission. The letter added that “AI poses enormous threats” to musicians’ rights to privacy, their identities, music and livelihoods, and its financial impact on working musicians “would be catastrophic.”
“This assault on human creativity must be stopped,” the letter continued. “We must protect against the predatory use of AI to steal professional artists’ voices and likenesses, violate creators’ rights, and destroy the music ecosystem.”
“We call on all AI developers, technology companies, platforms and digital music services to pledge that they will not develop or deploy AI music-generation technology, content or tools that undermine or replace the human artistry of songwriters and artists or deny us fair compensation for our work,” the letter concludes.
