London’s Hayward Gallery is set to unveil one of the largest retrospective exhibitions to date on acclaimed Japanese photographer, Hiroshi Sugimoto. Opening in October, Time Machine will present a comprehensive look at his 50 year career, including lesser-known works that encompass Sugimoto’s interest in mathematics, optical sciences, and the history of photography dating back to the 19th century.

Part recording device, part artistic tool, the camera has taken on many roles since Frenchman Joseph Nicéphore Niépce took what is considered as the oldest surviving photograph in existence. While that image appears almost like a charcoal drawing nowadays, the technology that goes into modern day equipment allows for a meticulous range of documentation — such as the many iconic landscapes, wildlife, and portraiture that Sugimoto has captured during his career.

“The camera can capture more than a single moment,” noted Sugimoto in a past interview, “it can capture history, geological time, the concept of eternity, the essence of time itself … The more I think about that sense of time, the more I think this is probably one of the key factors of how humans became humans.”

Time Machine will open on October 11 and run through January 7, 2024. Please visit Hayward Gallery to inquire about tickets and a full list of programming.
