If there was anything to signal the sustained fascination heading into 2015 that surrounded Nathan Williams’ culture-making title Kinfolk, it was the divided discourse that continued to attempt to make sense of the publication’s place in the world, a whole five years after its conception. A sampling of the articles published in the last year include “Why does Kinfolk magazine seem to split opinion so much?”, “39 signs you are in the Kinfolk cult,” and most notably, a Tumblr blog titled “The Kinspiracy,” which calls out the uniform, minimalist style that has spawned on Instagram thanks to the magazine’s singular aesthetic. However, Williams plowed on above the babble with building the Kinfolk empire, launching a home design-centric tome to add onto last year’s cookbook as well collaborations with the likes of Stutterheim, all atop a worldwide circulation of 90,000 in five languages. Meanwhile, its fashion label, Ouur, continued to strengthen its fanbase in Japan. One thing’s for sure: love it or hate it, Kinfolk is one magazine that’s alive as ever.
