French artist JR has had a uniquely phenomenal run over the course of his career, and his striking large-format, black-and-white photographic portraits of common people have taken a life of their own around the world, effectively transcending cultural and language barriers everywhere they have been exhibited. 2015 was certainly the peak of his career, with the artistic powerhouse traveling to Hong Kong, Boston, Paris, New York, Istanbul, Philadelphia and London to execute his projects. Some of his more notable accomplishments this year include Ellis, a short film on the history of New York’s Ellis Island starring none other than Robert de Niro; Les Bosquets, a film based on a ballet that tackles the subject of the 2005 Paris riots; a large-scale mural at New York’s Flatiron Building that captured imaginations from the cover of The New York Times Magazine; a 10-year retrospective of his work at Paris’ Galerie Perrotin, and a Phaidon art book dedicated to an in-depth look at the artist’s body of work. There seems to be no end to JR’s power to enchant, and we eagerly await his future endeavors to take place in 2016.
