Beneath M.I.A.’s often Billboard-friendly exterior exists a tendentious air to each musical product she delivers. Real-name Maya Arulpragasam, M.I.A.’s social commentary is just as much a part of her as her music, as she can at times deliver controversial messages within the confines of joltingly catchy productions. Following repeated postponements, Maya’s fourth studio album Matangi hit shelves in November, arriving as a pseudo-anthology of the sounds offered up from her previous three releases. In 2013, Versace’s sister brand Versus also tapped the Sri Lankan-born artist for a hip-hop inspired collection that also took cues from the aesthetic of counterfeit Versace pieces.
