A Bathing Ape

Bape, also known as A Bathing Ape, is a Japanese streetwear brand founded by Nigo in 1993. Today, Bape has retailers in Tokyo, Hong Kong, New York and has a host of sub-lines such as AApe, Baby Milo, Mr. Bathing Ape, BAPY, etc. The streetwear imprint is known for its recognizable ape logo, camo print and collaborations with streetwear labels such as supreme, Comme des Garçons and multi-national companies such as Coca-cola, Nintendo. Industry insiders and creatives such as Kanye West, Pharell Williams, A$AP Rocky, Lil Wayne, etc. also wore Bape. Currently the brand has 19 stores in Japan, with additional locations in Hong Kong, New York, Taipei, Bangkok, Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, and Singapore. The brand has also branched out from apparel, having opened Bape Cuts for hair cuts, a cafe, several imprint standalone stores for its in-house brands, as well as an art gallery in Kyoto. Bape was started as a small store called Nowhere in Japan, selling Bape Tee-shirts and camouflage print clothings. The name is a play on words to a Japanese saying, “A Bathing Ape In Lukewarm Water,” which insinuates overindulgence and serves as an ironic reference to Japan’s spoiled youth culture, which happens to be the brand’s own customers. Drawing inspiration from the original Planet of the Apes movies, the imprint’s clever marketing schemes and limited runs helped catapult BAPE to the very pinnacle of streetwear and as a result it is known as one of Japan’s pioneering streetwear brands. Soon Bape had became a mainstream streetwear brand which every teenage wanted. In 2011, Bape was sold to Hong Kong fashion conglomerate I.T. Group. Other than Bape, Nigo is also a part of the production of Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream Footwear brands. He is also the creative director for Uniqlo’s UT brand. In 2011, it was announced that Hong Kong-based fashion conglomerate I.T Group purchased the brand for $2.8 million USD, and by 2013 NIGO had stepped down from the brand’s creative helm.
