I want to start making beats on the side any recommendations?

[Quote] anytime defintiely keep me posted! What @500sd is right, listening to your work from different perspectives is key. So if it makes more sense to you to get some good headphones instead of monitors for sake of price portability whatever then go for it. Start small you always have room to go bigger

I want to start making beats on the side any recommendations?

How much experience do u have with it so far? Im assuming you are brand new to all of this. This is all just coming from personal experience, Ive considered this my main "hobby" for years now so take it how you will You definetly wanna get a pad sampler if you want to do hip hop. But you should learn how to go about chopping and slicing. If you have an iphone/ipad go download beatmaker 2 by intua... Its a simple drum sampler that embodies the function of any physical MPC/Maschine/etc that you would buy. The learning curve is easy, its self explanatory, and itll give you central understanding of how other pad samplers work. Its $20 bucks but worth it imo, even if you pirate everything else. Alot of times ill start a sample chop on that and load the audio file up into the computer, because in a daw you cant really PLAY anything unless you have a keyboard, which is what i like to do and why i have an MPC. If the app isnt an option for you, get a midi controller [URL] that will work inside of whatever daw you pick. Its just as easy to chop up samples inside of logic and load them to MPD pads via a sampler plugin (like exs24 in logic). Logic is what I use but as far as a DAW goes its all prefrence. Logic suits me the best because it handles audio well while adding alot of creative aspects. FL is good as well ive heard. Im guessing youll want to go with one of these because theyll suit your creative needs best. A key here is to really learn the daw; the worst way to get good at this is to download software and start spitting out beats. Sit down and watch tutorials and figure out the ins and outs as best as you can. This will help you do everything quicker, and you wont have to hit a wall because you dont know how to use a specific function in your DAW.  As far as hardware goes id say the most important part are monitors. If you are going to put your money into anything its that, even $500 headphones become irrelevant if you are going to be producing on monitors too. just do a little research on the ones you get (i like the presonus eris e5 or yamaha hs5). You wont really need an audio interface unless you want to start recording, or get a mixer involved. If you want to have a basic setup its not too complex. Personally i have a standard mixer with a built in audio interface, it allows for a few mics and connects to my computer usb. I have my turntable routed thru my mixer, so i can sample straight off of records into my MPC, then into my daw. If you are feeling really ambitious at this point you can do your final mix elsewhere. Once i create the beat and its crafted the way i like it, Ill track it out to individual audio files and load the individual track into pro tools. Then ill do the mixing, EQing and compressing and whatnot, adjust levels, basically everything to make it sonically pleasing. You can do this is the daw you work out of but pro tools handles audio phenomenally, while it lacks in the creativity department, almost the opposite of logic and which is why i choose to do it this way. That basically it. Get yourself a pad, a daw, and some decent monitors. Once you get past the basics its all preference really. Youll learn and over time generate a work flow that will become the standard way that you work, and thats a secret that every good producer has. Nothing makes me more envious of a producer when i listen to something and go "damn, how the fuck did he make this". All in all you gotta practice non stop thats really what its all about. hopefully this helped id love to hear back from you as you go along with this good luck my man

Opinion: 2015 was the best year for hiphop in the last decade

Someone tell me otherwise. Most of the major albums that dropped this year were ON POINT with a few (and i mean a FEW) exceptions. Its like for years new hip-hop has been in that awkard adolescent stage we all go thru growing up where we wanna be cool but we dont know what we wanna be so were just fucking awkward and wierd. And then one day you wake up and you are mature and confident and people know what you are all about. 2015 was that day for hip-hop. thoughts?!

[Quote] this is pretty good but if you want to be taken seriously you should be more serious about your work! Beat is not bad but its just repetitive and quiet, and it sounds like you recorded your voice on a cheap usb mic. This would be okay if you were really throwing yourself at it, but it just sounds like you wrote verses picked a beat recorded it once and uploaded it. If it sounds half ass, im only gonna listen half ass feel me? Work with what ya got, focus a little more on trying to make everything sound crisp after you put it together, download a daw and play with eq and things like that. The lyrics are great, just work on the delivery

[Quote] Not bad, i can tell you put some work into this. Flow is dope and you are pretty lyrical tbh. The singing is a little out of tune but it doesnt sound bad. The beat is also tight, i listened to some of your other beats on sc and was fuckin with them, super creative. no doubt youll get better daily if you really put your mind to all this shit

[Quote]  first song was hot af. As for the rest of it the vocals sound good for the most partand the style is on point, very current. very travis scott-esque if you will. Some of the songs dont really do it for me, sounds like you are trying to hard to keep a tight style throughout the tape. Sounds like you got the sound you are going for, its just a little stiff here and there. Thats just my opinion though

[Quote] you have some potential, production is quality and im loving your sample choices! (do i hear the tourist - gonzales there in track 2?)  seems like you have a definitive vision. keep houndin every day to hammer down your sound. The vocals could be a little warmer and the beat could hug the vox a little more. other than that I dig the sound u have going for yourself and just the style in general, its refreshing. keep up the good work

[Quote] Not bad. I like how you add some electronic elements in there to add some flare to the (imo) played out detuned/distorted "odd future" sound making it your own. Alot of the tracks sound a little stale tho, id work on trying to make your tracks sound full and not like they are missing something. Maybe some layering with the synths or some added percussion in the background. Flow is pretty tight

This is a good idea. Maybe take it a step further and add a sub-forum within music soley for posting and feedback? The music section was once a prosperous community for artists and producers... would love to see it revived. Hopefully this will keep actual music discussions seperate from production talk! loving the feedback im seeing already.
