Do Yall Thank Going to School for Graphic Design or Photography or Film is Worth It?

It's worth it to you if you really make the most out of it. I started at an art school within my high school learning video production, finally graduating with BFA in film. Did I get a lot out of it? Yes and no. Like most here said, word of mouth is very important if you plan on making a career out of it. I've learned the most applicable to the real world once working in post out in the real world. I noticed that having my background and experience from school definitely helped me in excelling quicker.

Very cool stuff. That wood grain deck and LEGO coffee table are my favorites.

DSLR recommendations.

How about a nice, used Nikon D80? You can probably pick one up for ~$600 and slap on a 50mm 1.8 for another ~$100. That should get you off to a great start.

Font size on magazines

There are also some general guidelines regarding body vs. heading type sizes as well. Generally 24pt. and above is considered ideal for display sizes, while those below are best for displaying copy. Remember that font size also depends on what dpi your document is set to. It may be obvious but remember that when selecting a font for copy, legibility takes precedence over type design. Whether you select a sarif or sans-sarif is entirely up to you for the tone and feel you are trying to invoke. That's why in magazines such as the New Yorker, you will find something classic like Garamond or Times for copy. Set spacing is also important when selecting a font size for proper legibility. I'm not an expert by any means, but those are just a few basics to keep in mind when selecting your font. If you really want to get into the nitty-gritty, I'd totally recommend "Designing With Type" by James Craig:

Quick question about a night shoot. I just bought a tripod because I've been wanting to go out and shoot some long exposure night shots. Unfortunately the only lenses in my arsenal at the moment are my 50mm 1.8 and the kit lens (18-55mm) that came with my Nikon D80. Ideally I would like to have a wider angle lens at my disposal, but I think I can make these work. Can anyone post up some links to great shots of night buildings or give me advice on composition? In the end I'd like to print in a large format matte poster size, around 27x40". It will be the first time I will be doing this also. What kind of prices have you guys been quoted for something like this? Should I take my images to print shop, or should I check online? It would be really nice to have proofs made first because I can imagine formats of this size can get expensive. Thanks.
