Dalla Whitney Biennial 2026 a MONUMENTS al LACMA, le mostre guardano al passato in cerca di risposte per il nostro futuro, e la sede di New York’ di Ruttkowski;68 partecipa con la sua nuova collettiva.

In programma fino al 9 maggio, We the Structures indaga gli intrecci emotivi e civici che definiscono la vita americana contemporanea, riunendo le opere di February James, Andrew Kass e Baseera Khan. Architetture di costrizione e possibilità emergono con nitidezza in quella che la galleria definisce «un promemoria che l’arte può ancora costruire ciò che le nostre strutture faticano a contenere».

La mostra si muove dentro e fuori il concetto di struttura, intesa sia come medium sia come soggetto, spaziando dal civico al cerimoniale. James, che lavora principalmente con pastello a olio, acrilico e carboncino, volge lo sguardo alla famiglia. «Let’s Make Our Dreams Synchronize» e «Love is the Only Solution??», due grandi pannelli che incarnano l’interiorità psichica della casa, sondando ciò che essa eredita e ciò che viene tramandato attraverso gli oggetti di ogni giorno.

Kass presenta opere tratte dalle sue serie A Little About Lots e PLAQUE spostando l’attenzione sulla città stessa. Ricontestualizzando in galleria il linguaggio materiale, grezzo, della riqualificazione urbana, l’artista mette a nudo le strutture e le reti di lavoro e di abbandono, riflettendo criticamente sulle nostre relazioni spaziali e civiche. Nel frattempo Khan, la cui pratica esplora la tensione tra il «devozionale e il disciplinare», si addentra in luoghi spirituali. I loro dipinti e installazioni indagano costellazioni di fede e autorità, come dimostra «Painful Arc, Shoulder-High I», un’imponente arcata illuminata di viola, traforata da sagome di danzatori in festa.

Come spiegano Roseline Michael Neveling e Leo Fitzpatrick, co-curatori e duo alla guida della galleria, la mostra si propone come riflesso del loro ambiente artistico più immediato. Un’ode a un ecosistema interdipendente sostenuto da speranza, fiducia e riparazione: «[La mostra] si legge come il preambolo d’artista a un’unione più perfetta, ancora in costruzione».
