Il futuro oggi sembra più vicino — incerto, inquieto e non più così lontano come immaginavamo. Il nostro tempo è segnato dal collasso: non da un’unica frattura, ma da un brusio sommesso e soffocante che fa da sottofondo alla quotidianità.

Ecco: Now What? Or What Else?, la prima mostra personale di Nina Chanel Abney da Perrotin Paris, in scia al recente annuncio della sua rappresentanza da parte della galleria francese. In questa nuova serie di opere, Abney rivolge lo sguardo alle disfunzioni che attraversano i piani ecologico, politico e culturale. In un’epoca in cui il disastro non è più “eccezionale”, l’artista pone una domanda ancora più scomoda: come facciamo ad andare avanti?

Invece di raffigurare la catastrofe al suo culmine, Abney si concentra sull’intorpidimento, sul distacco e sulla ripetizione che delineano il nostro clima emotivo: coppie che si abbracciano a letto accanto a montagne di panni, bagnanti che nuotano tra pesci morti, foreste che bruciano sullo sfondo di ritrovi felici. Con uno splendore grafico e audace, l’artista dipinge la tensione tra orrore e umorismo, rivelando come perfino i momenti più ordinari possano reggere il peso di un mondo irrazionale.

“Now What? Or What Else? non è un appello all’azione. È un ritratto di sopravvivenza emotiva”, ha scritto la galleria. “Non è l’inizio della fine. È un punto intermedio. Dopo il frastuono. Prima della resa dei conti.”
