SpongeBob Squarepants 海綿寶寶正式成為 LGBTQ+ 族群成員
引起網民激辯支持抑或拒看。
為了慶祝 Pride Month 同志驕傲月，由動畫公司 Nickelodeon 所製作的 SpongeBob Squarepants（譯：海綿寶寶）早先正式宣佈成為 LGBTQ 族群的一員。Nickelodeon 透過 Twitter 寫道：「Celebrating #Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month.」並以一張有著海綿寶寶、《Avatar: The Legend of Korra》的 Korra 以及《Henry Danger》的 Schwoz Schwartz 的彩虹照片呈現，無不有著象徵「出櫃」的意味。事實上，自《海綿寶寶》發行以來，粉絲們長期以來一直都認為海綿寶寶就是同性戀，但 Nickelodeon 並未確立角色的性別認同與性向身份。
雖然《海綿寶寶》已故作者早在 2005 年就表示海綿寶寶是 LGBTQ+ 族群，但他和 Patrick Star 派大星並非同性戀者，而是無性別者，今回 Nickelodeon 以海綿寶寶作為慶祝同志驕傲月的代表頗具意義，但也引起網民們的激辯，部分網民認為這無關他們喜愛《海綿寶寶》的心情，但也有網民表示將會因為海綿寶寶是同性戀者而阻止孩童觀看節目。
