針對此問，總教練 Tyronn Lue 認為 J.R. Smith 應是以為球隊是領先狀態，才會這樣處理球。LeBron James 則表示他並不了解 J.R. 當下在想什麼，但他不會放棄任何隊友，球隊必須持續前進，該系列賽尚未結束。J.R. Smith 本人則是在賽後親自為大家解惑：「當下知道球隊是平手局勢，而我認為抓到籃板直接進攻不會是好的選擇，因此將球帶出禁區，並以為球隊會喊暫停。J.R. 補充說明：假如我知道我們是領先的，我會抱著球等他們犯規。
