人氣美國動畫《Spongebob Squarepants》作者 Stephen Hillenburg 在去年患有「肌萎縮性脊髓側索硬化症」（Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis，ALS），也就是大眾熟知的漸凍人症。不幸的是，經官方證實，Stephen Hillenburg 於週一離世，享年 57 歲。
在進行《Spongebob Squarepants》創作前，Stephen Hillenburg 即是一位充滿熱忱的海洋學家，隨後選擇放棄教職，轉投動畫藝術領域進行鑽研，順利取得學位後的他正式踏入業界。1993-1996 年間先是進行《Rocko’s Modern Life》動畫創作，經過多年的經驗累積後，《Spongebob Squarepants》才正式誕生。
負責《Spongebob Squarepants》轉播的美國兒童頻道 Nickelodeon 也在今日發出哀悼聲明，感謝 Stephen Hillenburg 多年來的奮鬥，並表示《Spongebob Squarepants》象徵的樂觀、友誼與無限的創意將持續影響世界。
