Did you ever see that episode of "Entourage" where Turtle wanted to buy a pair of limited edition sneakers? Well, had he been in Metro Detroit he would have known that Revive in Birmingham is the place for one-of-a-kind soles. They're bringing the street style of NYC and LA to a new home right here in the D.
"Revive is a store that's really just built around individuality and street culture," says co-owner Darvonne McGee. "We found that a lot of things we were into, fashion wise, we just couldn't find anywhere around here. There was nowhere to purchase any of the items that were near and dear to our hearts."
To buy the pieces that spoke to their personal style, Darvonne and co-owner Aaron Cohen wound up having to order online or go outside of Michigan, like to NYC or LA, to get what they were after.
Both originally from the area, the old friends teamed up to create a shop that's "a lot of different stores in one, with sneakers, jeans, tees, sweatshirts, jackets, accessories, jewelry...all in to one shop", says Aaron. You don't have to go to just a sneaker shop to get the dopest sneakers and then to a jewelry shop to get your accessories or sunglasses. It's all in one place."
The sneakers are the stars of the shop. Everyone who knows anything about street culture has stopped by, including music producers Cool and Dre, Piston Rip Hamilton, and Cleveland Cavalier LeBron James, among many others who are in the know.
If you're looking for a pair of kicks that no one else will have, and you have some dollars to part with, you'll find the most unique pairs of sneakers around. And all of them limited edition, with some on consignment. Nowhere else will you find Berenstein Bear-inspired Nikes or vintage Air Jordans. The exclusivity and individuality is also part of what street culture is all about.
Don't know what street culture is? From the graffiti on the walls to their business cards, once you step inside you'll be immersed and schooled in Street Culture 101. But if you're still a little clueless, the Revive guys will let you know. "We don't just let [people] walk about the store and just sell them on items," says Darvonne. "We educate them on the piece that they're purchasing and where it comes from, what it means to other people." www.myspace.com/reviveclothes
