What do you mean by that?
Mar 14, 2012 @ 16:01
like when it comes to making basslines you should focus on the first third and fifth scale degrees. Yours were basically everywhere so they didn't really fit with the main synth melody. I would say practice/learn scales and learning basic theory will really help. Keep grinding and Good luck man.

I get what you are saying but I mean what I made was what I wanted.

Nevermind I went back and checked and I had my notes in the wrong place.

word. all western music, classical to nowadays pop, is all about scales. as somar so eloquently put it, fucks with the root first. which is the first scale degree. next important, the fifth or tonic, etc. i know if you didn't study music, but the theory behind scales is actually really mathematical. there is nothing really musical about learning it at all. let me know!

can you go more into this

music theory always confused me

do you mean 1st 3rd and 5th as in c, e, and g notes

or do you mean like g scale and c scale and shit like that?
Mar 14, 2012 @ 23:26
yeah, if your composing or playing something in the key of C you would focus on the Dominant which would be G and the third which would be E. When composing a bassline of some sort it makes sense to pretty much make these notes the focus. There is definitely more you have to know in order to make a proper line though and thats pretty much where progressions come into play.

this is a great site to learn the basics of theory. The school I go to is always recommending it to the incoming freshman. And its pretty much all you need to know in order to be a producer, imo.
