yo i'm thinking about upgrading my ps3's hard drive but i'm confused because tutorials have been telling me different things.

i'm thinking about buying this hard drive and curious if it's suitable for the ps3? http://www.compuvest.com/Desc.jsp?iid=1587740

also i don't have an external hard drive and i don't want to go too overkill with the memory since i'm only using this to backup my ps3.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822324029

the thing that confused me the most was that people said i have to format my external hard drive to fat32, but they said it was impossible to do on vista because it's over 32gb. is that true and if so how do i get pass that?
Jun 15, 2011 @ 14:34
You'll be fine man.
What I did was backup whatever data I wanted to save from the PS3 on a thumbdrive (the PS3 does it for you, just follow the on-screen instructions). Its easy.
Then when its done, pull out the old HDD, put the new one in, and I believe the PS3 prepped the HDD on its own when I put my HDD in.. I didnt do any formatting or anything on my PC before installing.

Copy your game saves and other files from your ps3 to a flashdrive or external harddrive. You don't have to do it through the backup feature of the ps3. Just go to a file on the xmb, press triangle, and copy it to whatever drive you have plugged in.

for formatting the external drive, you can only format 30 gb or so of it to fat32 because that's how the partitioning works with that format.

once you've copied your stuff, just take the harddrive out of the ps3, put the new one in the casing, slide it back in, and you're good. turning the ps3 on will format the drive to work and then you just have to copy your stuff back onto the system.

It's really easy. Google "ps3 hard drive upgrade" and look for a link to a guide on cnet asia or gamepro. Those are all you'll need.

The console cuts power consumption to 200W from 230W and drops in weight to 2.6 kg (5.7 lbs) from 3 kg (6.6 lbs). Pricing remains the same for the 320GB model and will make its way to shelves once the current stock runs out.

Maybe this has something to do with a cross-game chat related update coming soon...?

Yeah, ridiculous, I know.

I hate how you have to have your external drive set to a certain type of extension file. I got a 1TB external that's filled to 500Gigs with music and shit but I'm afraid to change the default file format because I don't want to lose this shit.

PlayStation 3 is really just hitting its stride. And technologically, I don’t think it’s possible to provide any advancement beyond what we have. What we’ve seen from the competition is trying to add features that already exist in PlayStation 3. We invested heavily in that, we rolled a very heavy rock up a steep hill, through the launch period. But now I think that all pays off, and we’ve got a long run way behind it. So, I wouldn’t look for any discussion of a next generation PlayStation for quite some time.
.
I think there’s ground to be carved out for everybody. But I didn’t see anything about Nintendo’s announcement that said ‘Oh, we’d better get working on rolling out a new PlayStation here pretty soon.’
.
Our attitude is kind of ‘welcome to the party.’ If you’re looking at being a multimedia entertainment device, if you’re looking at high def gaming, that was 2006 for us.

If anyone wants to make some money off that toys r us deal buy portal 2 and la noire and then return them to walmart without a receipt. Even though you won't get cash you'll still get a walmart giftcard for about $120.
