Der amerikanische Künstler Roe Ethridge öffnet das Nobuyoshi-Araki-Archiv für eine neue Duett-Ausstellung in der Anton Kern Gallery in New York. Araki, bekannt für seinen bekenntnishaften „I-Photography“-Stil, und Ethridge, ein profilierter Pop-Bildkünstler, treten hier erstmals gemeinsam auf – verbunden durch ihr Gespür für visuelle Spannung und ihre malerischen, kontrastierenden Bildkonzepte.

Kuratiert und inszeniert von Ethridge selbst, präsentiert die Ausstellung einen wahren Fundus aus Stillleben, Akten und Blumenarrangements, der die jeweils eigene Bildsprache der Künstler miteinander verknüpft. Ethridge zeigt zwei neue Prints aus seiner verträumten Pinhole-„Floral Arrangements“-Serie aus den 90er-Jahren – eine Entscheidung, inspiriert von Arakis in Liquitex getauchten „Painted Flowers“(2004), die die stille Banalität vorstädtischer Dekoration und Erinnerungen an die Kalender seiner Mutter heraufbeschwören.

Diese stellt er in einen Dialog mit ausgewählten Arbeiten aus Arakis Archiv, insbesondere „Flower Cemetery“ und „Tokyo Nude“. Inszenierte erotische Szenen treffen hier auf die Rauheit der Tokioter Hinterstraßen und wechseln zwischen öffentlicher und privater Sphäre, während die höfliche Anmut floraler Schönheit von unheimlichen Plastikfiguren durchkreuzt wird, die sich wie Fremdkörper durch die Werke ziehen.

Ethridge lässt sich von Arakis Instinktivität leiten – etwa in „Landing in Tokyo“, einem iPhone-Schnappschuss des Mount Fuji aus dem Flugzeugfenster, und „Rainbow over Shore Front Parkway“, einer erhabenen Aufnahme dessen, was nach dem Regen bleibt. Beide Arbeiten greifen die unmittelbare, körperlich spürbare Dokumentationsweise des japanischen Meisters auf und übersetzen sie in universelle, zeitgenössische Gesten.

„Nobuyoshi Araki and Roe Ethridge“ist noch bis zum 2. Juli in der Hauptgalerie der Anton Kern Gallery und im Schaufenster 91 Walker zu sehen.
