Last week, Hauser & Wirth unveiled an alluring joint exhibition of work by the prolific artists Larry Bell and the late John Chamberlain. Housed at the gallery’s Los Angeles outpost, the eponymously titled show presents an array of iridescent plexiglass sculptures, coated glass cubes, and rare works on paper.

The two artists met by chance in 1962 at Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles and quickly formed a close friendship over their equal interests across technical innovation and cross-pollination of ideas.

Back in the ’60s, Los Angeles was at the heart of the U.S.’ aeronautics industry. Bell began to incorporate its commercial manufacturing processes to his work, such as the acuum deposition chamber — also dubbed ‘The Tank’ by the artist — to which he could coat sheet glass in specific ways that alter how absorbent, transmissive, or reflective it appears to the eye.

Since then, Bell and Chamberlain embarked on a lifelong journey to create captivating studies that stretch the possibilities of form, materiality, and color.

Larry Bell & John Chamberlain is on view at Hauser & Wirth’s DTLA location until October 2.
