Italian luxury brand Salvatore Ferragamo has joined with Amazon to file two joint lawsuits against four individuals, or the defendants, and three entities citing attempts to sell counterfeit Ferragamo goods on Amazon’s platform. The fillings allege that the defendants used Ferragamo’s registered trademarks without authorization and deceived customers about the infringing products’ origins: a series of actions which violate the law as well as Amazon’s policy and Ferragamo’s intellectual property rights.

Amazon has previously filed joint lawsuits with other brands affected by counterfeiting, including Valentino, KF Beauty and YETI. The retailer emphasized its strict policy against counterfeiting and claimed to have invested more than $500 million USD in preventing fraud over the course of 2019 in a joint statement released by Amazon and Ferragamo. Last year, Amazon also started its Counterfeit Crimes Unit which works with local law enforcement worldwide to pursue and prosecute counterfeiters. It notably also claims that 99.9 percent of all products viewed by Amazon customers have not received a valid counterfeit complaint

The company’s emphasis on rigorous vetting, authentication and accountability makes sense given its ambitions to move more squarely into luxury retail. In May of last year, Amazon joined with Vogue to open “Common Threads: Vogue x Amazon Fashion,” a retail pop-up in support of COVID-19 relief for emerging designers which carried brands like Batsheva and 3.1 Phillip Lim. Amazon later launched its own luxury fashion e-commerce platform, Luxury Stores, in September.

Amazon also recently implemented a relatively unexpected shake-up, with Jeff Bezos stepping down from his role as CEO.
