Subaru Unveils 2022 BRZ, the Lightest RWD 2+2 in the U.S.

But still no turbo to be found.

After a highly successful run with the original generation, Subaru now reveals its latest iteration of the beloved BRZ.

The formula for the BRZ has not changed much. The 2022 model will still remain as a 2-door coupe, with rear-wheel drive, a front-mounted Boxer engine, and a limited slip rear differential as standard. The engine however has changed, now equipped with a 2.4L power plant found in Subaru’s Ascent crossover SUV. And while the Ascent’s motor is turbocharged the BRZ’s iteration of it is not, once again continuing the tradition of the BRZ being naturally aspirated. Regardless of the lack of forced induction, the 2022 model outputs 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, which is a 10% increase in horsepower and 15% bump in torque from the previous. A six-speed manual transmission remains thankfully standard, while a six-speed paddle-shifted automatic is an option. Lastly, weighing in at just under 2,900 lbs, Subaru lays claim that the new BRZ is the “lightest rear-wheel drive 2+2 production car in the US market.”

Styling-wise, the BRZ again hasn’t updated too extensively, as the 2+2 configuration coupe is still low slung with its raked rear windshield, and equipped with 17” wheels standard or 18” as options. The details are seemingly less aggressive than its predecessor, with a much less-sculpted set of headlights, simplified-yet-gaping front air opening, and boxier side intakes that have similar angles to a BMW M2. A large vent has been added right behind the front wheels, giving the impression of a wide stance but also allowing for a freer-flowing side profile. At the rear, the LED tail lights are also more minimalistic, adopting an eagle-eye look instead of the blob shape of the previous generation. A lower valance with integrated dual exhaust cutouts, centralized lower reflectors, and a mini ducktail spoiler round out a more tamed styling for the BRZ.

Pricing and availability has not yet been announced.
