Air Jordan 5 "What The" Mixes Eight Rare Styles

Can you name them all?

Once paradigms of rareness and exclusivity, “What The” styles from Nike and Jordan Brand have become increasingly common over the past few years thanks to a proliferation of colorful collage-style iterations of the Air Jordan 1, Air Jordan 4, Air Force 1 and others. However, Jordan Brand’s latest “What The” offering — a joyously jumbled Air Jordan 5 — aims to bring a punch of prestige by combining an even eight AJ5s into one single style.

The right foot begins with a yellow upper culled from 2011’s Air Jordan 5 “Tokyo,” a shoe that goes for four figure-sums — of which the first number is not a one — on the secondary market, and was released in celebration of a Jordan Brand flagship opening in Tokyo. The tongue uses 2006’s “Army Olive” hues, and the printed graphic on the collar’s lining draw from 2007’s “Laser.” Midsoles and outsoles pull from 2013’s Fresh Prince-inspired “Bel-Air.”

Meanwhile, the left foot’s upper borrows red suede from 2009’s “Raging Bull” pack. A yellow heel badge is taken from 2013’s rare “Shanghai.” “Bel-Air” makes a return, this time on the collar lining. Metallic tongues use the volt green accents from 2006’s cult classic “Green Bean,” while the black midsoles and volt outsoles are co-opted from 2011’s rare “Quai 54” PE.

Early reports peg this history-packed Air Jordan 5’s release date for November 7, but official conformation from Nike has yet to be arrive. The drop will likely go down on Nike SNKRS, with a retail price of $220 USD.
