Continuing the sports world’s support of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, the NFL has now announced a $250 million USD donation to combat systemic racism. Announced via an official statement, the professional American football league noted the pledge will take place over a 10-year period and that Colin Kaepernick’s protest years ago helped spur its social justice program.

“The NFL is growing our social justice efforts through a 10-year total $250 million fund to combat systemic racism and support the battle against the ongoing and historic injustices faced by African-Americans,” the league said in the statement. “The NFL and our clubs will continue to work collaboratively with NFL players to support programs to address criminal justice reform, police reforms, and economic and educational advancement. In addition to the financial commitment, we will continue to leverage the NFL Network and all of our media properties to place an increased emphasis on raising awareness and promoting education of social justice issues to our fans and help foster unity.”

The major donation follows commissioner Roger Goodell’s statement on behalf of the NFL in support of the recent movement against racial inequality. In his statement, Goodell admitted that the league was wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and pledged ongoing support to rectify its previous downfalls.

This donation comes following a video statement released by Roger Goodell last Friday on behalf of the NFL in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. “We, the National Football League, condemn racism and the systematic oppression of black people. We, the National Football League, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier, and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest. We, the National Football League, believe Black Lives Matter,” said Goodell.

In case you missed it, NASCAR recently announced the ban on confederate flags at all races.
