UPDATE (May 13, 2020): This Wednesday morning, Supreme announced on Instagram that it will donate a portion of the proceeds from the Daniel Johnston collaboration to the Hi, How Are You Project and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Both non-profit organizations provide support for youth affected by mental illness.

Accompanying the announcement, the label shared a stirring montage featuring archival clips of the late artist and musician. A voice over by Johnston is heard throughout the video with the artist expressing: “I think art has always been inspired by beauty. I think there have been many artists throughout history who had a major inspiration whether it’s a girl or even just a philosophy. That’s what i like about life and about art. It’s when you write a song it’s just the way you saw it or just the way that it was.”

ORIGINAL STORY (May 11, 2020): Supreme honors the late Daniel Johnston in its newest Spring/Summer 2020 collection. The Austin, Texas musician and artist, who passed away in September 2019, was a beloved and accomplished figure who created unique works of musical and visual art that took influence from his schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

The capsule collection features original artwork by Johnston and highlights some of his most iconic creations. Jeremiah the Innocent, the frog who graces the album cover of his 1983 album Hi How Are You, can be found on a pair of long-sleeve plaid shirts, work pants, T-shirts and beanies. Supreme also pays homage to his endeavors outside of music, including his comic book Space Ducks – An Infinite Comic Book of Musical Greatness and his illustration The Silver Sufferer, appearing on a bevy of hooded sweatshirts and T-shirts. Rayon shirts and embroidered work jackets round up the collection, offering more cohesive graphics that exhibit the haunting yet extraordinary artistry of Johnston.

The Supreme x Daniel Johnston Spring 2020 collection will see a global online-only release, available via the skateboarding label’s main webstore on May 14, and on its Japan webstore on May 16, with free shipping on orders over $150 USD.
