UPDATE: Paramount has announced that the currently untitled Coming to America sequel will be releasing next year on August 7, 2020, as reported by CNN.

When Coming to America 2 was announced, it was unclear if Eddie Murphy would be attached. However, it has been confirmed that Murphy will reprise his role as Prince Akeem alongside Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer.

Murphy and Brewer are just coming off working together in the upcoming Netflix film Dolemite is My Name, which played a part in Paramount hiring the director for the film. Murphy was reportedly very eager to work with the director once again because of the working experience they shared.

“After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward,” Murphy said in a statement. “We’ve assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite, and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”

Although the film will follow the initial draft of the script written by the original film‘s Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield, it will be rewritten by black-ish creator Kenya Barris. According to Deadline, the film will center on Akeem finding out he has a long lost son and will retrieve him so he can take his rightful place as heir to the throne. There’s currently no official production start scheduled for Coming to America 2.
