Dolce & Gabbana are no strangers to controversy and now the brand has cancelled its upcoming Shanghai catwalk show following a backlash to what has been perceived as a racist marketing campaign. The video, posted on Weibo on Monday November 19 showed a Chinese model eating Italian food with chopsticks and was taken down in under 24 hours following an outcry.

The backlash worsened with a series of offensive comments made on Stefano Gabbana and D&G’s Instagram accounts. The brand now claims the account was hacked but the screenshots have already been widely shared on social media and the hashtag #BoycottDolce was a trending topic.

As a result of this, the event has now been cancelled. This marks the second time D&G has landed itself in hot water over racist messaging in a relatively short time, with the brand last facing backlash for a #DGLovesChina campaign that locals felt looked backwards and underdeveloped.
