UPDATE: Sony finally addresses its cross-play controversy, following a lackluster response. PlayStation leader Shawn Layden told Eurogamer: ”We’re hearing it. We’re looking at a lot of the possibilities.” He continued, saying “you can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I’m confident we’ll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business.”

Fortnite has made its debut on the Nintendo Switch eShop after weeks of speculation, and in less than 48 hours has earned well over 2 million downloads. The title is available on every platform you can play games on, even Andriod and iOS, each able to play alongside gamers even if they have different consoles.

However, Sony will not allow Fortnite accounts attached to PlayStation 4 consoles to be playable on the Nintendo Switch, or even cross-play compatibility, despite the service being available on all other platforms. Fans took to social media to voice their opinion on the matter, forcing Sony to finally make a statement to the BBC:

We’re always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience. With [...] more than 80 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, we’ve built a huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles. We also offer Fortnite cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms. We have nothing further to add beyond this at this point.

Although the statement doesn’t address the issue, Microsoft‘s Major Nelson has gone on to show Xbox One players how to link to their Epic Games account. Epic Games has yet to make a statement of its own.
