Nike has signed a contract with Avangrid Renewables to invest in 86 megawatts of its Texas-based wind power. “This agreement enables us to source 100 percent renewable energy across our owned or operated facilities in North America,” says Hannah Jones, Chief Sustainability Officer and VP of the Innovation Accelerator for Nike. “Investing in renewable energy is good for athletes, the planet and for business.”

The partnership will allow for the creation of jobs, economic development for rural America, and advancing independent energy for the United States. Karankawa Wind Farm, the facility producing the power, is scheduled for a mid-2019 competition slate. “With this agreement, Nike will source 100% renewable energy across our owned or operated facilities in North America,” said Jones.

Nike’s power purchase agreement is comparable to powering over 400,000 average American households with carbon-free energy or the emissions reduction equivalent of taking nearly 800,000 vehicles off the road for one year. Avangrid Renewable’s previous power purchase agreement with Nike included three Columbia Gorge-based wind farms producing 100% renewable energy to its Beaverton, Oregon headquarters and almost all its Oregon-based facilities.
