Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly stepping into scripted television with Day 1s, a drama built around a fictional UK soccer agent. According to The Sun, the Portuguese superstar is teaming with Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn on the project, with Ronaldo set to both star and executive produce.
The series, per the report, follows a fictional agent named Stanley Dalton, played by Damian Lewis, and stems from an original idea by soccer agent Darren Dein. Filming is said to have started in London. Alongside Lewis, the reported cast is stacked with recognizable names, with Thierry Henry and the rapper Dave among those set to feature. The premise has drawn comparisons to The Playoffs, a recent Globo series in Brazil about a soccer agent that starred Cauã Reymond.
Day 1s would mark the first show to emerge from UR•Marv, Ronaldo and Vaughn’s banner and an offshoot of Vaughn’s Marv Studios that was first revealed last year. The joint venture has already completed two sports films according to its launch statement, and has said it will “embrace innovative technology, with a nod to tradition.” Deadline understands the drama will be independently financed through UR•Marv. Vaughn brings a distinctive action-forward résumé to the table, having directed Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Layer Cake and X-Men: First Class, as well as the Kingsman franchise.
The reported move fits a moment of transition for Ronaldo, who is now 41 and looking ahead. He still plays for Saudi side Al-Nassr, but his international career recently ended when Portugal exited the World Cup at the round-of-16 stage, losing to eventual winners Spain. Widely regarded as one of the greatest to ever play the game, and known above all for his years at Real Madrid and Manchester United, Ronaldo now appears to be reportedly plotting a second act that runs through the screen rather than the pitch.
