Christopher Nolan has officially revealed that audiences will have to wait at least three years before the release of his next cinematic project following the massive undertaking of The Odyssey. The acclaimed director admitted to the TODAY show that the grueling production of his latest historical epic pushed him to the absolute limits of his physical and mental stamina.
Nolan has maintained a highly reliable three-year release cadence for over a decade, dropping massive blockbusters like Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, and Oppenheimer like clockwork. However, the sheer scale of The Odyssey required unprecedented effort and endurance from everyone involved. The project stands as the first movie ever shot on IMAX 70mm film, necessitating the use of notoriously heavy, loud cameras in extremely remote, hike-in locations. He said about making The Odyssey, “I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody’s stamina, I think. mean, it’s The Odyssey, of course it should be difficult. We’re not doing the job right making a film of The Odyssey if it doesn’t seem difficult.” When asked about whether or not it would three years until he releases his next movie, Nolan replied, “Oh, at least.”
The commitment to intense practical effects—including placing Matt Damon’s Odysseus and his soldiers inside a fully constructed Trojan horse—took a profound toll on the cast and crew. Damon himself echoed the director’s sentiments, explaining that the daily discomfort of the shoot would have made him miserable twenty years ago, but he ultimately found the rigorous experience deeply fulfilling. As a result, the auteur is taking a well-deserved break, meaning fans shouldn’t expect his next major cinematic endeavor to arrive until at least 2029 or 2030.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is currently playing in theaters following its official release on July 17, 2026.
