Vertical has officially debuted the first teaser trailer for The Weight, an atmospheric, character-driven survival thriller starring Ethan Hawke and Academy Award winner Russell Crowe. Marking the feature directorial debut of veteran editor Padraic McKinley, the Great Depression-era action drama draws heavy inspiration from gritty 1970s survivalist cinema to deliver a high-stakes narrative anchored in absolute parental desperation.
Set in the unforgiving, foggy wilderness of Oregon in 1933, the plot follows Samuel Murphy (Ethan Hawke), a penniless war veteran and widower who finds himself wrongfully incarcerated inside a brutal backcountry prison labor camp. With his young daughter facing placement as a ward of the state in mere weeks, Murphy is trapped until the camp’s ruthless warden, Clancy (Russell Crowe), extends a dangerous lifeline. Clancy offers Murphy immediate freedom if he agrees to lead a ragtag crew of treacherous inmates on an off-the-books, high-stakes mission to transport a heavy stash of gold bars out of a remote mine on foot across a hundred miles of lethal terrain.
As the trailer details, the grueling journey quickly transforms into a pitiless test of physical and moral survival. The convicts are forced to brave treacherous river crossings, rickety high-altitude rope bridges, and severe environmental obstacles, all while fending off rogue wilderness thieves tracking the gold. However, the external elements prove to be only half the danger, as paranoia and violent betrayal quickly fester within the prison ranks, leaving Murphy to navigate an uneasy alliance to ensure he makes it out alive to reunite with his child.
The historical epic arrives with exceptional critical pedigree, having initially generated immense buzz during its world premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival in the prestigious Premieres section, followed by a screening at the Berlinale Special in February. Currently holding a stellar 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, critics have widely praised the feature as a return to old-school filmmaking, highlighting Matteo Cocco’s moody cinematography, an atmospheric score by Latham and Shelby Gaines, and a powerhouse performance from Hawke that evokes the muscular grit of Paul Newman’s classic anti-hero roles. The stacked ensemble supporting cast features Julia Jones (playing a resourceful cook named Anna), Austin Amelio, Avi Nash, Sam Hazeldine, and Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen.
The Weight is officially scheduled to make its exclusive theatrical debut across the United States on September 18, 2026.
