Following the groundbreaking unveiling of the Spring Drive Caliber 9RB2 at last year’s Watches and Wonders Geneva, Grand Seiko has extended this pinnacle of precision into the Evolution 9 Collection.

The introduction of the new Caliber 9RB1 movement marks a significant evolution, bringing ultra-precise mainspring-powered technology into a format designed for everyday versatility and enduring strength. Hand-assembled by highly skilled craftsmen and women at the Shinshu Watch Studio, the Caliber 9RB1 achieves its remarkable ±20 seconds per year accuracy through a meticulously vacuum-sealed crystal oscillator and an advanced low-power IC that minimizes the impact of external factors such as temperature, humidity, static electricity and light.

This technical mastery is paired with a deeply poetic, nature-inspired aesthetic through the “Ushio” design theme, which translates to “tide” in Japanese. Reflecting the waters that surround the Japanese archipelago – a timeless source of inspiration in Japan’s culture and art – the timepieces beautifully balance technical innovation with organic design. The collection features two distinct gradient dial expressions that capture the moving currents of the sea. The blue dial reflects the vast expanse of the deep ocean as light streams through its depths, while the green dial draws from the tranquil beauty of shallow coastal waters near the shore. Both variations utilize meticulously crafted, multi-faceted indices and diamond-cut edges to deliver exceptional brilliance and legibility at a glance.

While it’s built as a high-performance diving watch with 300 meters of water resistance, the implementation of the compact Caliber 9RB1 allowed Grand Seiko to craft its most wearable professional sports silhouette yet. Measuring just 40.8mm in diameter and 12.9mm in thickness, it is the smallest diver’s watch in Grand Seiko’s lineup, moving it away from purely utilitarian constraints and transforming it into a sophisticated accessory suitable for any occasion. The watch’s profile features broad lugs designed to capture light across a wide surface, giving it a commanding wrist presence despite its compact dimensions. This refined architecture ensures that the watch easily transitions from formal settings to active environments, offering a comfortable fit for a wide range of wrist sizes.

The physical refinement of the timepiece is further elevated by the choice of high-performance materials and functional innovations. Both the case and bracelet are sculpted from High-Intensity Titanium, a material that is roughly 30% lighter than traditional stainless steel and boasts a bright, lustrous tone. This provides an exceptional balance of scratch resistance, robustness, and lightweight comfort for daily wear.

Furthermore, the watch introduces an evolved bracelet design featuring a newly developed locking extension clasp with a sophisticated micro-adjustment system. This mechanism allows for up to 6mm of fine-tuning across a three-step micro-adjustment alongside an 18mm extension feature, while a secure GS emblem on the clasp functions as a locking mechanism to prevent accidental release. The result is a highly accurate, versatile masterpiece that seamlessly integrates ultimate precision into a modern, lifestyle-oriented format.
