Na Hong-jin is officially ready to terrify audiences once again. The acclaimed visionary behind South Korean horror masterpieces like The Wailing is returning with his latest directorial effort, Hope. Supported by indie powerhouse distributor Neon, the highly anticipated film boasts an incredible international cast and promises to deliver a gripping, mysterious creature feature that slowly descends into sheer cosmic horror.
Set in the remote, isolated South Korean village of Hope Harbor, the film centers on a community thrown into absolute chaos by the arrival of an unknown, havoc-wreaking creature. Local law enforcement, led by Police Chief Bum-seok (played by veteran actor Hwang Jung-min) and Officer Sung-ae (played by Squid Game breakout Hoyeon), are immediately called in to investigate the horrific aftermath and secure the village.
Meanwhile, deep in the nearby forest, a heavily armed coterie of hunters, including Sung-ki (Zo In-Sung), set out to track and kill the beast. However, the mission takes a dark, psychological turn as the hunters quickly realize they have become the hunted. Teasing the film’s deeper, more insidious themes, the official synopsis warns that “all is not as it seems, and perceptions can be misleading.”
Rounding out the massive ensemble cast are international heavyweights Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton, Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander, and Michael Fassbender. While their specific roles remain shrouded in mystery, they will undoubtedly play key parts in a story where “what begins as ignorance plants the seed of disaster, escalating through human conflict into a tragedy of cosmic proportions.”
