Lauren Halsey Readies a Technicolor Hollywood Bowl Takeover
Opening September 29, ‘emajendat’ will feature performances by Erykah Badu and Anderson .Paak.
Summary
- American artist Lauren Halsey will open emajendat at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on September 29
- The event will feature new works, technicolor staged designed by the artist, community activations and a concert to close it out
Lauren Halsey is set to take over the LA’s Hollywood Bowl come fall, transforming 18,000-seater in emajendat. Slated for September 29, the site-specific installation will include new artworks, community-first programming and a concert featuring the likes of Erykah Badu, Anderson .Paak, the Charles Gaines Collective and Black Nile.
The campus-wide takeover takes titular cues from Halsey’s 2024 presentation at London’s Serpentine Galleries, which brought a slice of South Central LA’s backyard culture to London: life-size vignettes of community heroes, prismatic CD flooring and a trove of figurines, “funkmounds” and sculptures. While bearing the same name, the artist promises that the ideas and work included in the upcoming LA presentation will be “very new.”
Airbrush stations, mini golf, ping pong and a roller “palace” are on deck for concertgoers with a special performance by Badu, .Paak (as DJ Pee .Wee) and more to close out the night. The concert will be held on a staged graced and designed by Halsey’s maximalist, technicolor signature.
For now, further details are under wraps, though a press statement teases it will be an imaginative crossover between architecture, art and sport, fused with the emblematic civic urgency of Halsey’s recently debuted “sister dreamer” sculpture garden.
Tickets for emajendat go live at 10AM PST on May 5 on Hollywood Bowl’s website. Head to the event page for more details
