GKIDS has announced that it will screen a new 4K remaster of Tekkonkinkreet across theaters in North America to celebrate the anime film’s 20th anniversary.
Originally released in 2006 and directed by Michael Arias, the film is based on Taiyō Matsumoto’s manga and has long been praised for its striking visual style and emotional depth. The remaster brings renewed clarity and vibrancy to its distinctive hand‑drawn and CG‑blended animation by Studio 4°C, which has since worked on other notable projects such as BESERK: The Golden Age Arc and PHOENIX: Reminiscence of Flower.
The screenings highlight the film’s enduring legacy as a landmark in anime storytelling. Tekkonkinkreet follows the lives of two street kids, Black and White, navigating the chaotic urban sprawl of Treasure Town. Its themes of friendship, survival and the clash between innocence and corruption resonate strongly two decades later, and the remaster aims to reintroduce these ideas to both longtime fans and new audiences.
The North American theatrical run will feature both the original Japanese audio with subtitles and the English dub, which stars Scott Menville and Casey Mongillo. Since its debut, the film has achieved cult status, winning the Animation of the Year award at the 2008 Japan Academy Prize and significantly influencing a generation of Western and Eastern animators alike.
