16 years after audiences last caught up with the Byrnes-Focker clan, Universal Pictures is bringing the beloved, awkward family dynamics back to the big screen. During its recent CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, the studio unveiled the first trailer for Focker In-Law, the fourth installment in the blockbuster Meet the Parents franchise. The legacy sequel flips the script on the original 2000 film, this time placing Ben Stiller‘s Greg Focker in the uncomfortable role of the overbearing, suspicious father-in-law.
Written and directed by franchise veteran John Hamburg, Focker In-Law introduces Grammy-winning superstar Ariana Grande as Olivia Jones, the prospective bride-to-be of Greg and Pam’s now-adult son, Henry (played by Skyler Gisondo). The trailer teases a hilarious role reversal: while Greg attempts to subject Olivia to the same grueling interrogation tactics he once faced, he is quickly outmatched by her intense background as an FBI hostage negotiator. Making matters worse for Greg—and much funnier for the audience—Olivia effortlessly breezes through the infamous lie detector test and easily wins the approval of the intimidating family patriarch, Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro).
The new installment features a dynamic mix of fresh faces and returning fan favorites. Alongside Stiller, De Niro, and Grande, the film boasts original cast members Owen Wilson, Teri Polo, and Blythe Danner, while introducing Beanie Feldstein as Henry’s twin sister, Samantha. De Niro and Stiller, who also serve as producers, appeared together on stage at CinemaCon to introduce the footage, with De Niro highly praising Grande as “probably the single funniest scene partner” he has ever shared the screen with. The sequel arrives in theaters on Thanksgiving later this year.
