Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has officially responded to the intense speculation surrounding the potential retail cost of Grand Theft Auto VI.
As the most anticipated entertainment release in history, GTA VI has been the subject of countless leaks and economic theories, most notably the rumor of a $100 USD price tag for the standard edition. Given the unprecedented scale of Rockstar Games’ upcoming Florida-inspired epic — which has reportedly incurred development costs exceeding $2 billion USD — many fans feared Take-Two would be the first to break the triple-digit barrier for a base game.
Addressing these concerns during a recent earnings call, Zelnick remained non-committal on a specific number but offered insight into the brand’s pricing philosophy. “Consumers pay for the value that you bring to them, and our job is to charge way way way less of the value delivery,” he said via IGN. “How you feel about something you buy is the intersection of the thing itself and what you pay for. Consumers need to feel like the thing itself is amazing and the price they were charged was fair for what they got.”
“If you look at it through that lens, that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. But that isn’t the lens through which we look. Instead, we look at…how do we deliver something amazing, and how do we make sure that what people pay for it feels very reasonable,” he continued. While he stopped short of debunking the $100 USD rumor entirely, his comments highlight the tension between recouping massive production budgets and maintaining accessibility for a global audience that has waited over a decade for the next installment in the historic franchise.
Zelnick shared, “What we think about is making the most spectacular piece of entertainment on Earth, in history — and it’s a pretty daunting challenge. If we do that, and if we’re of service to our customers, then the upside will take care of itself.”
Grand Theft Auto VI is currently slated for a November 19 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
