Following its massive Fall/Winter 2026 runway show at a local shipyard, Maison Margiela is taking its legacy directly to the streets. The luxury fashion house has officially opened “Artisanal: Our Creative Laboratory,” a sprawling open-air exhibition located on Yan Dang Road in Shanghai‘s Huangpu District. Acting as the first physical chapter of the overarching “MaisonMargiela/folders” initiative, the public installation invites fans to explore the deeply experimental foundation of the brand’s creative language.
Showcasing 58 couture looks selected directly by the Maison Margiela team, the curation spans the entirety of the house’s storied history and brings these pieces together for the very first time. The garments on display range from the brand’s inaugural Artisanal piece—the iconic Autumn/Winter 1989 porcelain plate waistcoat—all the way to a striking beeswax-treated Edwardian gown fresh off the FW26 runway.
Artisanal serves as the house’s Haute Couture line and the core origin of its working methods. Handcrafted by the Paris atelier, the line is built entirely on relentless experimentation and the meticulous reworking of found materials into new fabrications. To reflect these intense couture explorations, the Shanghai exhibition is divided into distinct thematic sections: upcycling, deconstruction, trompe l’oeil, archetypes, raw materials, and the transformation of the everyday. Nodding to the recent shipyard runway presentation, the historic garments are displayed inside industrial shipping containers placed directly on the open street.
To document the creative process, the brand is making all exhibition materials and installation documentation publicly available through a working digital folder on Dropbox, which will be updated as the project develops. Following the Shanghai installation, the tour will continue its journey across China, exploring the house’s signature anonymity and masks in Beijing, the iconic Tabi silhouette in Chengdu, and the bianchetto white paint technique in Shenzhen.
The “Artisanal: Our Creative Laboratory” exhibition is currently open to the public in Shanghai through April 6, 2026.
