Microsoft is officially ushering in a new era for its gaming division, announcing a massive corporate shake-up that sees longtime Xbox CEO Phil Spencer and President Sarah Bond stepping down from their roles.
After shaping the Xbox brand for 25 years and serving as CEO since 2014, Spencer leaves behind a monumental but complicated legacy. He is widely credited with rescuing the brand following the disastrous Xbox One launch, championing the Game Pass subscription model, and orchestrating industry-shifting mega-acquisitions of ZeniMax Media and Activision Blizzard. However, his departure also follows a turbulent period of high-profile studio closures—including Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin—and widespread job cuts. Spencer will remain in an advisory role until the summer before officially retiring from the company, while Bond resigned citing a desire to take her next personal and professional steps.
Stepping into the CEO role is Asha Sharma, who transitions over from her post as president of Microsoft’s CoreAI product. To round out the new leadership duo, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty has been promoted to Chief Content Officer. Given Sharma’s background, industry insiders immediately raised concerns that the tech giant might lean heavily into generative AI or slowly sunset the hardware business to serve broader corporate ambitions. Addressing the internal anxiety head-on, Sharma assured staff in a company-wide memo that she intends to return to the brand’s foundational roots, firmly stating, “we will not chase short-term efficiency or flood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop.”
The Xbox executive transition is currently underway, with Phil Spencer officially departing his advisory role in the summer of 2026.
