Summary

  • Max Verstappen reveals he is considering quitting Formula 1 at the end of the 2026 season
  • The reigning champion told BBC Sport he is heavily dissatisfied with the new engine regulations
  • The Red Bull driver questions whether the grueling calendar is worth it when the on-track enjoyment is missing

Formula 1 superstar Max Verstappen has sparked widespread conversation after revealing he is considering an early exit from the grid following the 2026 season. According to recent reports from ESPN, the four-time world champion is increasingly dissatisfied with the trajectory of the sport, openly admitting that he is simply not enjoying the driving experience under the new rules.

Verstappen’s frustrations stem from the sweeping 2026 technical regulations, further clarifying that his issues are not with his team at Red Bull. “Privately I’m very happy. You also wait for 24 races. This time it’s 22. But normally 24. And then you just think about is it worth it? Or do I enjoy being more at home with my family? Seeing my friends more when you’re not enjoying your sport?” he told BBC Sport.

“I can easily accept to be in P7 or P8 where I am/ Because I also know that you can’t be dominating or be first or second or whatever, fighting for a podium every time. I’m very realistic in that and I’ve been there before. I’ve not only been winning in F1,” he shared. “But at the same time when you are in P7 or P8 and you are not enjoying the whole formula behind it, it doesn’t feel natural to a racing driver.” Despite trying to adapt, Verstappen said that racing is now “really anti-driving.” He continued,  “And of course you can look at it and make a lot of money. Great. But at the end of the day it’s not about money any more because this has always been my passion.”

The story arrives follwing a report from reliable Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, which hinted at his exit from F1.

The upcoming Formula 1 vehicles feature a revamped power unit requiring an even split between traditional combustion and electric power. With the hybrid system relying entirely on energy recovered during deceleration, drivers must carefully monitor electricity harvesting. Verstappen likened the updated machinery to “Formula E on steroids,” noting that the severe emphasis on energy management detracts from the pure thrill of pushing a car flat-out. The 28-year-old also previously compared F1 racing to Mario Kart at the Chinese Grand Prix in mid-March, stating, “This is not racing.”

While his current Red Bull Racing contract extends until 2028, his future within the organization appears heavily dependent on his enjoyment of the 2026 ruleset. Although F1 leadership has attempted to downplay the ongoing retirement hints, the Dutch racing icon has already made it clear that he could easily leave the paddock behind to pursue other global motorsport projects.
