Junya Watanabe’s Fall/Winter 2026 collection, titled “The Art of Assemblage Couture,” transformed a Paris runway into the dramatic setting of an imagined tango club. Set to the rhythmic sounds of Astor Piazzolla’s “Libertango,” the presentation was characterized by a mood of “designed chaos” and intense emotional theatricality.
Models performed choreographed mood swings – alternating between rejection and flight – while styled with tear-streaked mascara and retro finger waves. This evocative atmosphere served as a backdrop for Watanabe’s exploration of high-fashion forms constructed from a gritty, realistic jumble of found objects and industrial materials.
True to its title, the collection was built from unexpected materials and objects, assembled into couture‑like silhouettes that balanced chaos with coherence. Silhouettes leaned heavily into Watanabe’s signature “moto-mania,” incorporating an array of motorcycle ephemera from protective gear, gloves to helmets. Several pieces projected a futuristic “super-suit” aesthetic, defined by articulated arms, cyborg-style peplums and exaggerated, hulking shoulders.
Meanwhile, other looks incorporated faux fur, Lurex, knit patches, or even stuffed toy animals. Notable looks included a dramatic opening featuring Maggie Maurer in a hulking garment constructed from gloves and protective gear paired with a flared skirt.
The palette was eclectic, with metallics, utilitarian hues and bursts of color from unconventional materials, reinforcing the tension between couture refinement and raw assemblage. The result was a collection that challenged traditional definitions of luxury, presenting fashion as a collision of worlds — at once chaotic, emotional and meticulously crafted.
